What is a pTSO?
PTA? PTO? PTso? What's the difference?!
People often use the acronyms for these well-known parent-teacher groups interchangeably. But is there a difference between a PTA, PTO, PTSO, etc? The simple answer is yes but all focus on the same goal of enriching and supporting their students school.
PTA | School-based groups that choose to belong to the PTA must pay dues to the state and national organizations and abide by state and national group rules. In return, they get member benefits, and they get a voice in the operations of the larger organization.
PTO | PTO (Parent Teacher Organization), on the other hand, is a generic term. It usually represents groups that choose to remain independent. These are most often single-school or district-level groups that operate under their own bylaws and primarily concern themselves with the goings-on at their building or in their town only.
PTSO | Similar to the PTO, we also believe in student involvement. Therefore, at South Colby Elementary, we are registered 501(c)3 PTSO (Parent Teacher Student Organization). We do not require a formal membership or fees for participation. We strive to support our small school with the talents, resources, and creativity of all facets that make up our PTSO.

WHO can participate?
Anyone who is a part of the South Colby family is a member of the PTSO. There are no dues to pay or requirements to meet. It is up to you, how much you'd like to be involved.
Why should I Volunteer?
Because involvement can make a dramatic difference for your children.
When parents are involved in their children's education at home, they do better in school. And when parents are involved in school, children go farther in school and the schools they go to are better.
It feels great to participate and share in your student's school related experiences.
One study found that students from families with above-average parent involvement were 30 percent more successful in school than those with below-average involvement. Success was measured by GPA; test scores in math, science, reading, and social studies; promotion and retention rates; and teacher ratings.
You'll get to know other parents.
It's powerful to create a circle of adult friends around school and enjoy those shared interests.
It's a management commitment.
Volunteering can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Spend an hour at bingo night or movie night and your efforts will be appreciated from not only the PTSO but all families who participate in the events. We want all areas of volunteering to be open pages so you know exactly what is being asked, the estimated time commitment, and what you feel comfortable helping with. Teamwork and support is the core of South Colby's PTSO.
You can tailor volunteering to play your strengths.
Within a parent group or school community there are many ways to contribute, some of which are sure to complement your strengths, talents, interests, or professional skills.
Have a great idea?
Volunteering gives you opportunities to get your ideas out there. We love new ideas, programs, and connections to make South Colby the best it can be for all students.

What is required to join the PTSO?
We do not have a membership application, as all family members can be apart and help with the PTSO. We just work together and do all we can for the staff and students at South Colby!
We are required by the School District to request a background check which is handled and managed by the South Colby Office Staff. The required form to authorize a background check can be found under the Bobcat 101 section with other helpful forms.
